Iran confident US responsible for Mercer’s attack, calls for responsibility – Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that Washington is convinced Iran bears responsibility for the attack on the ship Mercer Street that took place off the coast of Oman last month and called on the community international to hold Tehran to account.

UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – August 9, 2021) US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Monday that Washington was convinced Iran was responsible for the attack on the ship Mercer Street that took place off the coast of coasts of Oman last month and called on the international community to hold Tehran accountable.

“After reviewing the available information, we are convinced that Iran carried out this unwarranted attack which is part of a pattern of attacks and other provocative behavior. These actions threaten the freedom of navigation on this crucial waterway, the international shipping and trade and the lives of the people on the ships involved, ”said Blinken.

“It is up to all our nations to hold those responsible to account,” he said.

The Japanese merchant vessel flying the Liberian flag and managed by the Israeli company Zodiac Maritime was attacked on July 29, resulting in the deaths of two crew members, nationals of the United Kingdom and Romania.

Israel said on Wednesday that Saeed Ara Jani, the head of the UAV command of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was behind the airstrike on the ship.

British Ambassador to the United Nations Barbara Woodward also said last week that Iran was behind the attack, adding that London would seek to hold Tehran accountable for its alleged involvement.

Iran has denied all the charges.
