Iran recalls its ambassador to Sweden following a court ruling

Dubai, United Arab Emirates — Iranian state television said Thursday that the country’s foreign ministry had recalled its ambassador from Sweden after an Iranian citizen was sentenced to life in a Swedish court for committing war crimes and murder during the war. Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.

The report quotes ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani as saying the ambassador arranged for a “consultation” on Hamid Noury’s life sentence earlier this month.

Stockholm District Court said Noury took part in serious atrocities in July and August 1988 while working as an assistant deputy prosecutor at Gohardasht prison, outside the Iranian city of Karaj.

The court said Noury, 61, participated “in the executions of numerous political prisoners” in Iran that summer.

Throughout the trial, Noury denied any wrongdoing and Iran called the court a “show” based on political motives.

The development comes at a tense time for relations between Stockholm and Tehran. A number of Europeans have been detained in Iran in recent months, including a Swedish tourist, two French citizens, a Polish scientist and others.

The detentions have raised concerns that Iran hoped to use the prisoners as bargaining chips to pressure the United States and European countries into granting the sanctions relief it has received under its tattered 2015 nuclear deal.

Noury was arrested in November 2019 upon arriving in Stockholm for a sightseeing trip.

In another development, Iran summoned the Argentine charge d’affaires to Tehran over the travel ban Buenos Aires imposed on five Iranian flight crew after their plane landed at an airport in the South American nation in June.

Argentine prosecutors said they had launched investigations to determine whether the crew members – 14 Venezuelans and five Iranians – had links to international terrorism or other illicit activities.

Iran denies the accusation and considers the travel ban a violation of the crew’s rights.
