Maharashtra’s Covid tally crosses that of Iran, deaths also rise to 1.47 lakh


The cumulative count of Covid-19 in Maharashtra crossed the 8 million mark – what is below Netherlands and above Iran – since the outbreak of the pandemic in the state in March 2020, health officials said here Saturday.



The state recorded 2,760 new infections on Saturday, and the total jumped to 80,01,433 total cases recorded over the past 26 months.

By comparison, the Netherlands has reported 82,31,077 cases so far, while Iran has reported 72,46,707 cases so far, standing at No. 16 and No. 17 respectively, on the Worldometer.

Covid-19 deaths in Maharashtra hit 147,976 – just below France’s 150,017, although this European nation is No. 4 in the world with 3, 21, 15,604 cases in total to date according to Worldometer data.

Exactly a month ago, on June 9, Maharashtra had hit the mark of 79 lakh cases, and the state has maintained a healthy recovery rate of 97.92% plus a low death rate of 1.84%.

In the past 26 months, Pune and Mumbai have been worst hit by Covid-19, both in terms of cases and deaths, among the state’s 36 districts.

Pune’s tally hit 14,72,905 cases with 20,549 deaths, and Mumbai is next with 11,17,474 cases and 19,624 deaths, while Washim reported the lowest number of infections – 46,329 cases, and Hingoli has recorded the lowest number of deaths – 514 deaths, so far.
