Mundra Port: 52kg of cocaine worth Rs 500 crore seized

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 52 kilograms of cocaine worth around Rs 500 crore, hidden in a consignment of salt, at Mundra Port in Kutch, an official said on Thursday.

According to the DRI, he had launched “Operation Namkeen” after being informed that a shipment of salt sent from Iran to the port of Mundra could contain narcotics. On May 24, DRI officials intercepted a shipment of approximately 25 megatons of common salt at Mundra Port shipped from Iran.

“…a consignment declared to contain 1,000 bags of common salt with a gross weight of 25 MT, which had been imported to Mundra port from Iran, was identified for detailed examination. The consignment was considered for three consecutive days, May 24-26,” DRI’s statement read.

“During the examination, some bags were found to be suspicious as a substance in powder form with a distinct odor was found in them. Samples were taken from these suspect bags and tests were carried out by officials from the Forensic Science Branch of the Government of Gujarat, who reported the presence of cocaine in these samples. So far, 52 kg of cocaine have been recovered by DRI. Examination and seizure proceedings under the provisions of the NDPS Act 1985 are ongoing. The roles of various individuals involved in said import shipment are also being investigated by DRI,” the statement read.
